It’s one thing to say your business is working toward sustainability. It’s quite another to track your efforts and prove you’re making progress. Navistar has done just that by issuing yearly sustainability reports for over 20 years. Their efforts extend to every part of their involvement in the trucking industry, including manufacturing, service, hiring and education. “Truck, Parts, Service” took a look at the company’s latest sustainability report and Navistar’s plans for the future.

The 2021 report doesn’t just look at the last year’s accomplishments. It also establishes a roadmap for improved sustainability. CEO Mathias Carlbaum says this roadmap focuses on the industry’s shift toward both electric and autonomous vehicles, with an eye on improving the planet for future generations. Here are some highlights from Navistar’s 2021 sustainability report:

 – The company launched two new fully electric models: a medium duty truck and a school bus.

– Navistar’s NEXT Solutions team designed a mobile educational experience for Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) sales and service training. It is currently touring North America.

– Navistar committed to a 20 percent improvement in energy intensity through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Plants program. The company is also working toward setting goals for the Targets Initiative.

– The company introduced a diversity demographics dashboard, providing managers with information about employee demographics across the company. This tool will be used to widen hiring diversity.

– Navistar partnered with the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and SkillsUSA to build the TECH EmPOWERment platform. This platform supports their dealer network’s efforts to recruit, train and retain staff. The platform also donates heavy equipment, supplies and training aides to technical programs. In 2021, 36 equipment donations were made to 32 schools across the United States and Canada.
